smART Talk | Inga Guzyte

If those skateboards could talk! Join Inga Guzyte in conversation with Nathan Vonk, owner of Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery, discussing how her one-of-a-kind mosaic sculptures, created exclusively from discarded skateboard decks, contain both a new image and the history of its material.

Inspired by MCASB's summer exhibition Barry McGee: SB Mid Summer Intensive, the 2018 smART Talks series features local emerging artists whose work references urban culture in distinctly different ways.

Inga Guzyte, born in Lithuania and raised in Germany, combines her passions for skateboarding, woodworking, and art, capturing the world of street culture while empowering women to shape all of these worlds. After moving to the US at the age of twenty one Guzyte majored in Art Studio emphasis at Santa Barbara City College. Her work is been exhibited nationally and internationally in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Vienna.

Artists in the 2018 series of smART Talks are represented by Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery as part of Sullivan Goss Extracurricular (SG:Xc), a gallery program taking advantage of off-site pop-up opportunities to build a market for the work of exciting young, emerging artists.

The smART Talks lecture series serves to increase awareness of regional contemporary art through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and honors artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.
