Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) presents Falling into the Future: Kinetic Art at the Edge of the World (October 4, 2026 - May 1, 2027) which has been conceived of as a new contribution to the genre of Kinetic Art in presenting new perspectives on technology, through artworks made by contemporary artists living in California and around the Pacific Rim including Korea, New Zealand, and Nicaragua. These artists utilize robotics, AI, video, light (both natural and artificial), and interactivity to speak to global concerns around climate change, traditional ecological knowledge, the impact of technologies on the body, and the poetics of the mundane. 

 

Falling into the Future: Kinetic Art at the Edge of the World features: 

• Kelly Akashi, Patricia Belli, Mary Heebner, Chanel Khoury, Ayoung Kim, Dr. JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, Anne Niemetz with Newton Chan, Gabriela Ruiz, Manjari Sharma, Diana Thater. 

 

• A series of interventions by David Horvitz, an exhibition within the exhibition, that offers a playful dynamic counterpoint while emphasizing the Pacific Ocean as the protagonist. 

 

• The Judith Center, an art centered non-profit organization that uses art to talk about gender inequality at large in American culture founded by artist Kathryn Andrews as a partner on public programs. 

 

• The continuous screening of Jean Cocteau’s Address to the year 2000 from 1963, installed in the glass box in front of the museum and on view twenty-four hours a day.
